Job 2
1On another
day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came
with them to present himself before him. 2And the LORD said to
Satan, "Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming
through the earth and going back and forth in it."
3Then the
LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one
on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns
evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him
to ruin him without any reason."
4"Skin
for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own
life. 5But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and
he will surely curse you to your face."
6The LORD
said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare
his life."
7So Satan
went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores
from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. 8Then Job took a
piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.
9His wife
said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and
die!"
10He
replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from
God, and not trouble?"
In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
11When Job's
three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the
Naamathite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out
from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him
and comfort him. 12When they saw him from a distance, they could
hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and
sprinkled dust on their heads. 13Then they sat on the ground with
him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they
saw how great his suffering was.
Psalm
87
1Of the
Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song. He has set his foundation on the holy mountain;
2the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of
Jacob. 3Glorious things are said of you, O city of God: [Selah] 4"I
will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me-- Philistia too,
and Tyre, along with Cush-- and will say, 'This one was born in Zion.' " 5Indeed,
of Zion it will be said, "This one and that one were born in her, and the
Most High himself will establish her." 6The LORD will write in
the register of the peoples: "This one was born in Zion." [Selah] 7As
they make music they will sing, "All my fountains are in you."
Luke
8:1–8
1After
this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming
the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2and
also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called
Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3Joanna the wife of
Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women
were helping to support them out of their own means.
4While a
large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town,
he told this parable: 5"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As
he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and
the birds of the air ate it up. 6Some fell on rock, and when it came
up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7Other seed
fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8Still
other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times
more than was sown."
When he said this, he called out, "He who
has ears to hear, let him hear."
