Jeremiah 26:16–24
16Then the officials and all the people said to the
priests and the prophets, "This man should not be sentenced to death! He
has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God."
17Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and
said to the entire assembly of people, 18"Micah of Moresheth
prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. He told all the people of
Judah, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says:
" 'Zion will be
plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a
mound overgrown with thickets.'
19"Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in
Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah fear the LORD and seek his favor? And
did not the LORD relent, so that he did not bring the disaster he pronounced
against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves!"
20(Now Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim was
another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD; he prophesied the same
things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did. 21When King
Jehoiakim and all his officers and officials heard his words, the king sought
to put him to death. But Uriah heard of it and fled in fear to Egypt. 22King
Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan son of Acbor to Egypt, along with some other
men. 23They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King
Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the
burial place of the common people.)
24Furthermore, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported
Jeremiah, and so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
Psalm
150
1Praise the
LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2Praise
him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. 3Praise
him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4praise
him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5praise
him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6Let
everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.
Acts
15:36-41
36Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us
go back and visit the brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of
the Lord and see how they are doing." 37Barnabas wanted to take
John, also called Mark, with them, 38but Paul did not think it wise
to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued
with them in the work. 39They had such a sharp disagreement that
they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40but
Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41He
went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
Acts
16:1-10
1He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a
disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but
whose father was a Greek. 2The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke
well of him. 3Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he
circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew
that his father was a Greek. 4As they traveled from town to town,
they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem
for the people to obey. 5So the churches were strengthened in the
faith and grew daily in numbers.
6Paul and his companions traveled throughout the
region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from
preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7When they came to the
border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would
not allow them to. 8So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9During
the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him,
"Come over to Macedonia and help us." 10After Paul had
seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that
God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
