Jeremiah 3:19–25
19"I myself said,
" 'How gladly
would I treat you like sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful
inheritance of any nation.' I thought you would call me 'Father' and not turn
away from following me. 20But like a woman unfaithful to her
husband, so you have been unfaithful to me, O house of Israel," declares
the LORD.
21A cry is heard on the barren heights, the weeping
and pleading of the people of Israel, because they have perverted their ways
and have forgotten the LORD their God.
22"Return, faithless people; I will cure you of
backsliding."
"Yes, we will
come to you, for you are the LORD our God. 23Surely the [idolatrous]
commotion on the hills and mountains is a deception; surely in the LORD our God
is the salvation of Israel. 24From our youth shameful gods have
consumed the fruits of our fathers' labor-- their flocks and herds, their sons
and daughters. 25Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace
cover us. We have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our fathers;
from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the LORD our God."
Psalm
119:113–120
113I
hate double-minded men, but I love your law. 114You are my refuge
and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. 115Away from me, you
evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! 116Sustain me
according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. 117Uphold
me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. 118You
reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain. 119All
the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes.
120My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
Acts
1:1–11
1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all
that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up
to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he
had chosen. 3After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and
gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period
of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4On one occasion,
while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me
speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
6So when they met together, they asked him,
"Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"
7He said to them: "It is not for you to know the
times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you
will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth."
9After he said this, he was taken up before their very
eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was
going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11"Men
of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the
same way you have seen him go into heaven."
