Ezekiel 37:1–14
1The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me
out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full
of bones. 2He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great
many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3He
asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?"
I said, "O
Sovereign LORD, you alone know."
4Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones
and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5This is
what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and
you will come to life. 6I will attach tendons to you and make flesh
come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will
come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' "
7So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was
prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together,
bone to bone. 8I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and
skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath;
prophesy, son of man, and say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may
live.' " 10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath
entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army.
11Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones
are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope
is gone; we are cut off.' 12Therefore prophesy and say to them:
'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your
graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
13Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open
your graves and bring you up from them. 14I will put my Spirit in
you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will
know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.'

Psalm
139
1For the
director of music. Of David. A psalm. O LORD, you have searched me and you know
me. 2You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts
from afar. 3You discern my going out and my lying down; you are
familiar with all my ways. 4Before a word is on my tongue you know
it completely, O LORD. 5You hem me in--behind and before; you have
laid your hand upon me. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too
lofty for me to attain. 7Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can
I flee from your presence? 8If I go up to the heavens, you are
there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9If I rise on
the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10even
there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11If
I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around
me," 12even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night
will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. 13For you
created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14I
praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are
wonderful, I know that full well. 15My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of
the earth, 16your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained
for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17How
precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18Were
I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am
still with you. 19If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away
from me, you bloodthirsty men! 20They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name. 21Do I not hate those who hate
you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you? 22I have
nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. 23Search me, O
God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24See
if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Acts
2:1–21
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all
together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a
violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were
sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated
and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews
from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd
came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own
language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men
who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears
them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites;
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia
and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both
Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the
wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12Amazed and perplexed,
they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They
have had too much wine. "
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his
voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in
Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These
men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16No,
this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17" 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out
my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men
will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18Even on my
servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they
will prophesy. 19I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs
on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20The sun
will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great
and glorious day of the Lord. 21And everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved.'
John
16:4–15
4I have told you this, so that when the time comes
you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I
was with you.
5"Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of
you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6Because I have said these
things, you are filled with grief. 7But I tell you the truth: It is
for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come
to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will
convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in
regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to
righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no
longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this
world now stands condemned.
12"I have much more to say to you, more than you
can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will
guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what
he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will bring
glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15All
that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take
from what is mine and make it known to you.
