Samuel 5
1After the
Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2Then
they carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. 3When
the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his
face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back
in his place. 4But the following morning when they rose, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head
and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body
remained. 5That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor
any others who enter Dagon's temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.
6The LORD's
hand was heavy upon the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought
devastation upon them and afflicted them with tumors. 7When the men
of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of the god of Israel
must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon
our god." 8So they called together all the rulers of the
Philistines and asked them, "What shall we do with the ark of the god of
Israel?"
They answered, "Have the ark of the god
of Israel moved to Gath." So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9But after
they had moved it, the LORD's hand was against that city, throwing it into a
great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an
outbreak of tumors. 10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the
people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought the ark of the god of Israel
around to us to kill us and our people." 11So they called
together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, "Send the ark of the
god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it will kill us and our
people." For death had filled the city with panic; God's hand was very
heavy upon it. 12Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors,
and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
Psalm
26
1Of David.
Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the
LORD without wavering. 2Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my
heart and my mind; 3for your love is ever before me, and I walk
continually in your truth. 4I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do
I consort with hypocrites; 5I abhor the assembly of evildoers and
refuse to sit with the wicked. 6I wash my hands in innocence, and go
about your altar, O LORD, 7proclaiming aloud your praise and telling
of all your wonderful deeds. 8I love the house where you live, O
LORD, the place where your glory dwells. 9Do not take away my soul
along with sinners, my life with bloodthirsty men, 10in whose hands
are wicked schemes, whose right hands are full of bribes. 11But I
lead a blameless life; redeem me and be merciful to me. 12My feet
stand on level ground; in the great assembly I will praise the LORD.
Acts
26:1–11
1Then
Agrippa said to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself."
So Paul motioned with his hand and began his
defense: 2"King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand
before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews, 3and
especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and
controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.
4"The
Jews all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child, from the beginning
of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem. 5They have
known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that according
to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee. 6And
now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our fathers that I am on
trial today. 7This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to
see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. O king, it is because
of this hope that the Jews are accusing me. 8Why should any of you
consider it incredible that God raises the dead?
9"I
too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name
of Jesus of Nazareth. 10And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On
the authority of the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when
they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. 11Many a time I
went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force
them to blaspheme. In my obsession against them, I even went to foreign cities
to persecute them.
